A new agreement to upgrade the Solomou Square bus station and promote sustainable mobility in Nicosia was signed on Friday. The deal, between the transport ministry and Nicosia municipality, aims to modernise infrastructure, improve public transport services and encourage the transition to electric buses.

The signing ceremony took place at Nicosia town hall, with the ministry’s director general, Marina Ioannou Hassapi, and Nicosia mayor Charalambos Prountzos formalising the agreement. The project will focus on upgrading the existing facilities, enhancing passenger services, and optimising the station’s operations.

A key part of the plan is the shift towards electric mobility. By integrating electric buses, the initiative seeks to reduce transport emissions and support the city’s environmental goals. Authorities hope this move will make public transport more efficient and appealing to residents.

This agreement is a crucial step in improving public transport and sustainable urban mobility,” said Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades.

He highlighted the inclusion of rest areas and sanitation facilities for bus drivers, as well as designated parking spaces for buses.

For years, transport workers have been calling for better working conditions and safety measures, and today we are delivering on that commitment,” he added.

The project forms part of a broader strategy by the ministry of transport and Nicosia municipality to create a modern, eco-friendly transport system. Officials say the improvements will enhance passenger comfort, increase reliability, and encourage more people to choose buses over private cars.

With the agreement now in place, authorities will begin planning the next steps, including design work and securing necessary approvals. The ultimate goal is to transform Nicosia’s transport network into a greener, more efficient system that meets the needs of its growing population.
