United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday briefed European leaders on this week’s Cyprus talks held in Geneva, reiterating that the Cyprus settlement issue remains one of his priorities.

Guterres met with EU leaders during a working lunch as part of a European summit in Brussels. The meeting of the Council of the European Union mainly focused on the Ukraine conflict.

Citing an EU official, the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) reported that the UN chief said the Cyprus issue is one of his priorities.

The same unnamed official told CNA that President Nikos Christodoulides, as well as Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, likewise referred to the Cyprus peace process in their remarks at the summit.

Mitsotakis reiterated Greece’s position – a settlement on Cyprus based on the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. He also underlined the importance of continuing talks aimed at reunifying the island.

In Geneva, the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides agreed on confidence-building measures – including opening four crossing points, demining, establishing a youth affairs committee, and launching environmental and solar energy projects.
