Single at 40. Now, what? In the case of Vicky, the protagonist of Netflix’s show Envidiosa (Envious) she is fed up with seeing her friends get married before her. Though in a seemingly happy and good-on-paper ten-year relationship, she gives her boyfriend an ultimatum – either they get married or break up. When the latter unfolds, we follow Vicky on both a search for new love and a journey of self-discovery.

Chaotic and unsatisfied with life, Vicky turns everything upside down and ends up nowhere near where she wants to be: married with children. But why she really wants that life is a question not even her psychologist can help with.

One of the reasons I enjoyed watching this tightly-written series, besides the fact that it shows female friendship and the exhausting modern dating scene, is Vicky’s therapy sessions. It is not often that we see a character’s in-depth analysis of her life and emotions with a therapist on screen and it feels refreshing to watch. Although she is often in denial and her thinking muddled, she returns to every therapy session curious to understand herself, her life, and her wants and desires. If only more people off-screen were so open and courageous with their feelings.

Envidiosa is easy to watch. Bonus points if you crave watching a Spanish-language series that is not set in Spain and features the Madrid accent. This show is an Argentinian production with two seasons available on Netflix, following Vicky’s tragicomical life, her relationships with men, her friends, her mother and her absent father.

It is light-hearted and funny and it seems to be doing well – season two debuted with 15.8 million viewing hours around the world. No surprise then that Envidiosa has just been renewed for a third season coming to Netflix soon.
