Six months after having appointed a religious coordinator, President Nikos Christodoulides has yet to assign him any official duties, reports said on Tuesday.

According to daily Haravghi – affiliated to the Akel party – in October 2024 the president appointed Kyprianos Louis to the position of Coordinator of Religious Groups. A relevant statement was issued at the time.

The position is part of the office of the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Missing Persons and Enclaved Persons.

But the paper noted that, to this day, Louis – formerly a senior public education official – has been assigned no duties. Moreover, he has neither an office nor any staff to generate work.

Louis has also never been summoned to the presidential palace for a ceremony where he’d be assigned a portfolio – meaning he still lacks the authority to perform any duties.

Reportedly, in the interim the presidential palace had asked Louis to send it a memo describing his duties. Louis complied, sending the memo – but the palace never responded to it.

This inaction is said to have upset the various religious groups – Maronites, Armenians and Catholics – who have made their feelings known to the government.

Press reports at the time said it was these religious groups that had specifically asked for Louis’ appointment to the position of religious coordinator.

Louis works pro bono.
