The cross-border digital health services are in the final stage of implementation, Constantinos Pattichis, president of the National e-Health Authority, confirmed on Friday.

The first phase will include two key features, a patient’s summary health record and electronic prescription services. These tools will make healthcare more accessible to European citizens travelling or staying in Cyprus.

The summary record provides doctors with essential medical information during emergencies, while electronic prescriptions allow patients to receive medication from pharmacies across EU countries.

Speaking to Cyprus News Agency, Pattichis said, “Any European citizen, regardless of their country of residence or length of stay, will feel safer knowing that in an emergency, healthcare professionals will have access to their vital health data.”

He explained that these digital services mean travellers can contact local doctors while abroad, knowing their prescriptions and medical history are instantly available, enabling faster and safer treatment. More services are expected in a second phase, including cross-border access to imaging reports, lab results, and hospital discharge summaries. These additions will further improve medical care for Europeans across the continent.

The summary health record, available throughout the EU, ensures proper care even when a patient is far from home.

In urgent situations, doctors can access crucial data to deliver the right treatment quickly.

Pattichis also highlighted the importance of electronic prescriptions in continuing care, especially for people who run out of medication while travelling.

“It helps patients get their medicine in other EU countries without delays,” he said.

Once fully implemented, Cyprus will offer advanced e-Health services, improving access to health information and strengthening overall healthcare quality. The National e-Health Authority acts as Cyprus’ national contact point for cross-border healthcare. It ensures the secure exchange of medical data in line with EU standards and GDPR regulations.
