The charming village of Platres is about to turn into a stage like no other. Nestled in the mountains, this open-air mini theatre festival is all about celebrating Shakespeare — but not in the way you might expect. Think site-specific performances, creative twists and a whole lot of surprise moments that invite both seasoned fans and total newcomers into the bard’s world.
Curated by director Paris Erotokritou, the festival brings a fresh and playful energy to Shakespeare’s work. There will be staged readings, live music, a Shakespeare-themed shadow theatre workshop for kids, a pop-up bookshop, and more – all unfolding throughout the village in unexpected ways.
At the heart of it is an 11.30am promenade performance that winds between Platres’ two waterfalls – Caledonia and Millomeris. Picture this: six actors scattered along the trail, performing famous monologues and scenes from Shakespeare’s plays, guiding the audience as they move through footpaths, hotel courtyards, and even historic churches. You might see an actor emerge from behind a tree or disappear into the woods mid-scene. It is theatre meets nature in the most enchanting way.
For younger visitors (ages 6–14), artist Maria Markou will host a shadow theatre workshop in the village square, bringing the playful characters of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to life. Children will get to create their own shadow puppets and learn the basics of shadow play.
Later in the day, at 5pm, five actors and a musician will perform Venus and Adonis, Shakespeare’s narrative poem, followed by an 8pm staged reading with acclaimed Cypriot actress Agni Scott, which will be the only event in English. This special piece reimagines Desdemona – through the voice of Toni Morrison – as she meets Orson Welles’ cinematic Othello.
And while all that’s happening, the village square will be buzzing. A pop-up Shakespeare bookshop will run all day, with reads for both kids and grown-ups, and at 1pm, the Windcraft Band will fill the village with live music.
Whether you’re here for the performances, the workshops, or just to soak in some mountain air with a side of art and storytelling, this promises to be a day in Platres like no other.
