The three suspects arrested in connection with the illegal slaughter of a kangaroo in Famagusta earlier this month are set to appear in court on May 23, police said on Friday.

“Today, the police registered the case before the Famagusta District Court. The 55-year-old is the owner of the premises where the animal was found, while the 54-year-old is an employee and animal caretaker,” said Famagusta police spokesman Andreas Konstantinou.

He added that the third suspect, a 36-year-old man who was arrested at the scene with chopped kangaroo parts beside him, remains in custody, while the other two have been released on bail.

The 36-year-old is also facing prosecution for illegally residing in Cyprus after his asylum application was rejected in 2022, Konstantinou said.

Police are continuing their investigation in an effort to locate two more suspects: one who was reportedly present at the scene with the 36-year-old but fled before police could intervene, and another allegedly involved in transporting the animal to the parking lot where it was slaughtered.

On May 7, police discovered two individuals cutting up a kangaroo in a Famagusta parking lot. Officers found five knives, an axe and animal remains at the scene.

The suspect claimed he had received the animal from Paralimni. The investigation is ongoing.
