Safe Bulkers, the Limassol-based shipping company led by Polys Hajioannou, has extended its support to the Cyprus Maritime Academy (CyMA), awarding eight cadets with annual scholarships of €5,000 for the full duration of their four-year studies.

The award ceremony for the academic year 2024–2025 was held at the company’s headquarters in Limassol, in collaboration with Intercollege and CyMA.

This marks the second year of the Safe Bulkers Cadet Scholarship Programme, which aims to reward academic excellence while strengthening the pool of skilled professionals available to the Cypriot shipping industry.

Ahead of the official proceedings, cadets had the opportunity to engage with senior management, including company president Loukas Barbaris and crew department representatives, to learn more about their upcoming internships aboard Safe Bulkers’ modern fleet flying the Cypriot flag.

The students were also introduced to the firm’s advanced digital fleet monitoring tools by members of the technical team, offering them a first-hand look at the systems driving modern ship operations.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hajioannou referred to the programme as a strategic investment in the country’s shipping future.

“The scholarship program is an important initiative for the creation of new talents and tomorrow’s executives in the shipping sector of Cyprus,” he said.

He also noted that this also strengthens Cyprus’ ability to compete on the international stage in light of growing challenges.

He added that Cyprus needs professionals who are not only capable but also well-trained, “in order for them to constitute the future executive potential of Limassol-based shipping companies.”

Hajioannou further stressed that Safe Bulkers remains committed to bolstering the Cypriot flag in the global maritime sphere, believing that initiatives like this contribute meaningfully to both the students’ personal goals and the wider industry.

The company also acknowledged the role of the Cyprus Maritime Academy and Intercollege in making the event possible, thanking them for their ongoing collaboration.

In a closing message to the cadets, Safe Bulkers “welcomed them into its extended maritime family and wished them success ahead.”
