Workers at three hotels in Limassol went on a spontaneous strike on Friday morning.

Trade union Sek announced that workers at the Atlantica Miramare hotel, the Atlantica Oasis hotel, and the Atlantica Bay hotel have all engaged in a “short-term” strike, demanding the “full implementation of their collective agreement”.

“Despite repeated contacts with the company, there has been no progress, resulting in the employees reacting spontaneously,” Sek said.

It added that the Atlantica group, the owner of all three hotels, has been “systematically committing a series of violations”, including cutting off workers’ union subscriptions, “thus preventing free trade union action”.

Additionally, the union alleged that the Atlantica group is “engaging in intimidation practices against the striking workers”.

It said a complaint has been filed to the labour relations department.

The strike comes a day after a three-hour general strike erupted across the country, with workers downing tools for three hours on Thursday to demand the continued existence of the cost-of-living allowance (CoLA).

Public services and public transport were the most affected, with more than 50 flights and 15,000 airline passengers impacted by the strike, while trade unionists across the island took to the streets.
