Cyprus Marine Club sees record turnout for geopolitical shipping eventThe Cyprus Marine Club drew a full house for its latest members’ event this week, with around 130 members and guests gathering at Gazebo Mare for an evening focused on the geopolitical pressures reshaping shipping.
The club said the turnout made it one of the best-attended events in its history, reflecting strong interest from across the maritime community at a time of continued regional and global uncertainty.
Opening the event, Cyprus Marine Club president Captain Eberhard Koch welcomed guests and said the strong sense of community continued to define the club.
He also referred to recent global developments affecting shipping, noting ongoing regional sensitivities and their possible longer-term implications for global trade and the maritime sector.
At the same time, Koch drew attention to the industry’s human dimension, acknowledging the challenges faced by seafarers in recent weeks and reaffirming the club’s recognition of their essential role.
He also updated members on the club’s continued growth, saying it now includes 177 members representing around 440 professionals, which he said emphasised the organisation’s growing relevance and reach within the sector.
He added that “the club’s progress continued to depend on the backing of both members and sponsors, and expressed appreciation for their support.”
During the evening, the club also welcomed SPACEL Cyprus Limited as its newest corporate member, further expanding its network.
Koch then introduced keynote speaker Theodore Chouliaras, chief executive of Upoil Tankers, describing him as a distinguished petroleum economist with extensive experience in shipping finance, investment banking and capital markets.
Chouliaras delivered a presentation titled ‘The Geopolitical Impact on the Future of the Maritime Industry’, focusing on how geopolitical tensions, shifting trade routes, energy security concerns and regional instability are reshaping global shipping dynamics.
According to the club, the presentation was “extremely valuable and rich in insight”, while Chouliaras also kept the audience engaged through his humour. It added that attendees listened “in complete silence throughout”, reflecting both the relevance of the subject and the quality of the insights shared.
He also emphasised the growing importance of strategic adaptability, while stressing the need for shipping stakeholders to anticipate risks, respond to market volatility and navigate an increasingly complex global environment.
Following the presentation, guests stayed on for dinner and networking, using the evening to exchange views and strengthen professional ties within the maritime community.
The Cyprus Marine Club said it remains committed to fostering dialogue, collaboration and knowledge-sharing across the industry, and added that its upcoming events include the annual general meeting scheduled for May 26.
