Coronavirus: Units for school rapid tests (Updated with locations, times)

Υπουργείο Υγείας – Πρόγραμμα ελέγ

Starting from Thursday, the health ministry will deploy 27 mobile testing units to carry out rapid antigen coronavirus tests in schools for pupils, teachers and school staff.

This follows the ministry’s decision to introduce a mandatory weekly check for teachers, staff at schools and pupils aged 12 and older.

Teachers and pupils can also use the various testing points which operate daily in all districts, the ministry announced.

The mobile units will conduct rapid tests on staff and pupils of public and private lyceums and technical schools on March 4 and 5 while testing will be repeated in the period from March 10 to 12. In the following week, from March 15 until 19, the gymnasiums will be included.

Parents and legal guardians of students aged 12 and older will be asked to give their written consent for their offspring to be tested. Parents will be sent an SMS informing them of the procedure.

The regular screening of school staff and pupils reduces the possibility of the spread of the virus, making schools safer for both staff and pupils, the health ministry’s announcement concluded.

However, a number of parents are outraged over the decision and have already said they will not give their consent. They have said they will pursue legal action or report the issue to the police if the schools insist on the weekly rapid tests.

A new Facebook group created on Monday, called Enomenoi Goneis (United Parents), which represents parents opposed to the specific decision, as well as other measures pertaining to schools, grew to nearly 800 members overnight.

The programme for the mobile units is as follows:
