Plate tectonics: mapping the earth’s changing faces

In this video, we meet Lucía Pérez-Díaz, a geologist at Oxford, who studies our planet’s stunning ability to constantly change its face, through the process of plate tectonics.

Plate tectonics is the narrative arc that ties together every episode in the earth’s geological history.

Thanks to the magnetic compasses hidden in volcanic rocks, scientists know where each tectonic jigsaw piece has been over eons of time. And because of this knowledge, they can replicate the plates’ odyssey in beautiful and precise simulations, revealing the destruction and creation of earth’s many faces.
