Dreamtime: flying over the abandoned village of Foinikas

For those who know the island’s less-frequented places, its landscape, shorn of contemporary structures and 21st-century markers, is often fertile ground for the imagination.

Add to that a centuries-old history of conquests and displacement, and patches of Cyprus remain in a kind of ‘dreamtime’ suspended animation, able to shimmer into different places and times.

Here, thanks to the adventuring spirit and creativity of local videographer and wedding photographer George Avgousti, we fly over the ruins of Foinikas village, located northeast of Anarita, along the banks of the Asprokremmos dam.

Seen with the 4K eye of George’s drone, and set against the backdrop of the reservoir’s waters, and dusty, arid landscape, our sense of the present ‘unravels’. This leaves us free to re-connect Foinikas’ remains to a very different age, such as when it served as a 12th-century base for the Knights Templar.
