Police in Paphos are investigating after a hire car crashed with another driven by a 44-year-old woman on the motorway at 1.50 on Sunday morning.

As a result of the crash, the hire car burst into flames, killing its driver.

The incident happened on the Limassol-Paphos motorway near the Yeroskipou exit on the side heading towards Paphos when the driver of the hire car turned onto the wrong side of the highway.

Fire services arrived at the scene and put out the fire.

The couple from the second car, the 44-year-old woman and her 64-year-old husband both from Kouklia, were taken to Paphos general hospital where their condition was said to be serious but out of danger.

Investigations are continuing to try and identify the driver of the hire car, which according to police should happen during a planned autopsy.

He is believed to be a close relative of the owner of the hire car company. His family have been informed.
