Coronavirus: Two deaths, record 5,048 test positive on Friday (Updated)

The health ministry announced that two people had died of Covid-19 and that a record 5,048 had tested positive from, another record, 169,476 PCR and rapid tests, a positivity rate of  2.98 per cent.

The deaths concerned a man aged 76 and a woman aged 78. Total deaths stand at 638 with an average age of 76.

There are 180 people in hospitals of whom 79 are in serious condition. Of these, 28 are intubated.

The ministry said that the percentage of unvaccinated patients was 85  per cent.

Of the 169,476 tests on Friday 14,971 were PCR and 154,505 rapid tests, with 164,428 people testing negative and 5,048 testing positive as follows: 

  • 105 from 6,186 samples taken at airports 
  • 1,352 from 7,816 samples taken through private initiative.
  • 25 from 480 samples processed at hospital labs 
  • 2,815 from 121,614 tests done at private labs and pharmacies.
  • 751 from 32,891 tests at the ministry’s free programme for various groups 

In addition, the following tests were done without detecting any positives:

  • Two tests done on GP referrals 
  • 487 tests done through contract tracing from confirmed positives
