Over 850 firecrackers have been seized by the police in the run up to Easter, which are thought to have come from the north.

Police said on Sunday that during checks on Saturday a car driven by a 27-year-old in Larnaca on Saturday was signaled to stop. Instead the driver put his foot down and left the scene.

The car was found abandoned nearby while the driver went to a police station.

The suspect said he had been to the north where he bought 22 boxes of firecrackers, and he then took police to a spot where he had left them.

At the spot police found 860 firecrackers which were confiscated as evidence.

The man was charged in writing and released.

In another incident, on Friday police stopped the car of a 65-year-old man which had 300 small cylinders with a wick believed to be firecrackers, which have been sent to the state lab and are awaiting the result of tests.
