New technical schools will be built in 2023, general secretary of the union of technical school teachers’ (Oeltek) Lenos Loizou said on Tuesday.

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, he said that opening new positions at schools is also a priority for Oeltek.

“We are waiting for construction works to start in Limassol and Larnaca, and also for decisions to be taken regarding the opening up of new schools in Nicosia and Paphos, where there is high demand from perspective students but no premises yet,” he said.

“Technical education needs to grow and new branches need to be introduced, for the benefit of the Cypriot economy. This is why we need new technical schools,” Loizou added.

He also called for additional staffing at technical schools since new subjects have recently been introduced.

“It is unthinkable that subjects like graphic design or hairdressing are currently taught by teachers without experience or knowledge of the specific field,” he said.

“At the moment, three evening technical schools in Cyprus do not have a principal. In addition to that, assistant principals are also needed. We have raised the issue with the education ministry and we are awaiting a proper response.”

Loizou also said Oeltek is in favour of the introduction of twice-yearly exams in technical schools, claiming they will benefit the students and improve the level of teaching.
