Cyprus events mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day

terezin locandina

As the world marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27 with tributes and events, concerts and film screenings will be held on the island to remember the historical date.

The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra has three upcoming concerts as part of its Premier 2 series, on January 26 in Larnaca, January 27 in Nicosia and January 28 in Paphos, in which it will pay tribute to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust with special invited guests.

The orchestra will share the stage with the renowned Israeli conductor Doron Solomon and its very own violinist Nikos Pittas. The concert, in collaboration with the foreign and education ministries, will include the Cyprus premiere of Karl Goldmark’s Violin concerto in A minor.

The concerto is described as a hidden gem of the romantic repertoire and soloist Pittas is bound to capture the delicate emotions of this concerto, full of ardent yearning. Also part of the concert is Antonín Dvořák’s exquisite Symphony no. 7, which creates a sombre, dramatic atmosphere.

The embassies of Israel and Italy are also organising commemorative events at the end of January, presenting two films. The documentary Speer Goes to Hollywood will be screened on January 26 at the Pantheon Cinema in Nicosia and on January 30, at the Cultural Centre of the European University will host a screening of the film Terezin, both highlighting stories from the holocaust.
