A 25-year-old high school teacher remanded in connection of child sexual abuse is feared to have acted inappropriately against five minors, it emerged on Friday.

“These are very serious charges. These are offences of possessing and acquiring child pornography, attempt to molest children, sexual abuse and harassment,” police spokesman Christos Andreou told CyBC radio.

The crime came to light following a report filed by parents two days ago, and investigations unveiled the gymnasium teacher may have also been involved in cases with another four children.

Stressing the sensitivity of the case, he said he could not delve into details but called on the public to trust the police and speak out over any fears or concerns.

Nicosia district court remanded the teacher for eight days on Thursday.

The education ministry said the suspect is not a permanent staffer, but is a contract worker for the Drase program which deals with helping vulnerable students. All affected students will receive psychological support.

Andreou said during a search of the suspect’s home police officers found and seized as evidence a mobile phone, two laptops, two hard disks and a USB drive.

Andreou warned of an increasing trend of child pornography cases, with 133 reported cases in 2018, spiking to 237 in 2022.
