Sixteen men who appeared in distress aboard a boat off the coast of Cavo Greco were rescued by the coast guard on Friday evening.

According to the search and rescue coordination centre (Ksed), around 7.15pm the Larnaca centre received information about a boat with possible migrants in distress, which was sailing about 12 nautical miles southeast of Cavo Greco, within the republic’s jurisdiction.

“Ksed proceeded with the implementation of the ‘Nearchos’ national plan, mobilizing two coast guard boats,” the announcement said.

“The operation was completed around 8.35 with the rescue of a total of 16 people, all men,” it added.

It was also noted that the rescued, who are in good health, were transferred to the Paralimni fishing shelter for further management by the competent state services.
