Larnaca wages war on mosquitoes

The Larnaca municipality is taking the fight to mosquitoes, it said on Saturday, continuing its inspections and spraying of areas known to have high volumes of the insect.

It said it is placing “particular emphasis” on the town’s salt lakes, where mosquito larvae are known to hatch, and is using biological insecticides to kill them off as they are protected areas.

In addition, they said, rainwater gates, outdoor pools, and other areas with stagnant water are also being sprayed.

They added that this is being done with the aim of reducing the number of mosquitoes present in Larnaca to “protect public health and not cause a nuisance to residents or visitors.”

With this in mind, they said “due to the high temperatures observed and since the conditions are favourable for mosquitoes to multiply, we are calling on people to take their own measures to prevent mosquito larvae from hatching.”

This can be done by avoiding the existence of stagnant water, with the municipality asking its residents to “not keep containers, barrels, or old tanks with water inside on their premises.”

They have also asked residents to clear wild vegetation from their houses and other properties so mosquitoes “do not find shelter”.
