The 16-year-old from Palestine, who appears to be the driver in the fatal road accident in Larnaca on Wednesday night, has been issued a seven-day remand order to facilitate police investigations.
Police are investigating a case of causing death by negligence and a litany of motoring offences, as well as of having left the scene of the accident.
The Larnaca district court heard that a testimony has been secured that places the teen behind the wheel of the car involved in an accident on Wednesday night, in which 18-year-old backseat passenger Giulia Mihaela Vasile from Romania and permanent resident of Cyprus, lost her life.
On Saturday, coroner Orthodoxos Orthodoxou will be carrying out the autopsy on the 18-year-old’s body to determine the cause of death.
The police are still searching for a 20-year-old who appears to have been a front-seat passenger.
Both people aged 20 and 16 allegedly left the scene of the accident on foot.
The vehicle had been reported stolen. In the accident, it mounted a pavement, swerved into a road sign and hit a tree from the side before coming to a stop when hitting a second tree.
An 18-year-old Jordanian national was also hospitalised as a result of the collision, though he was later discharged and arrested on suspicion of stealing the vehicle and conspiracy to commit a felony.
He appeared in court on Thursday, where he was remanded in custody for eight days.
