Higher education is a transformative force that empowers individuals to shape their futures, follow their dreams and positively impact their communities. In the case of disadvantaged youth, access to university education can be especially life-changing, offering skills and opportunities that not only contribute to individual growth, but also foster a generation of knowledgeable, capable adults, whose knowledge and confidence can address and alleviate local challenges, as well as inspire younger generations to dream beyond their circumstances.

XM, an international group in the investment services sector, recently embarked on its third humanitarian mission to Uganda, once again proving the company’s ongoing commitment to the local community. The mission’s goals included improving educational infrastructure, supporting healthcare initiatives, and delivering essential supplies to those in need.

One of its most significant moments was XM awarding four deserving Ugandan students higher education scholarships, in collaboration with Agapis Heria, a Cyprus-based NGO that supports local and African children. By providing students with access to higher education, XM has invested in unlocking their potential, which will play a fundamental part in the future development of the broader communities these students call home.

During their visit to Monde, Uganda, XM’s team met with the four scholarship recipients, engaging in profound conversations about their aspirations, dreams, and motivations for their chosen paths. These students, who had faced significant barriers to higher education, represent a new generation of Ugandan citizens, committed to using the knowledge and skills provided by their education at Ugandan universities, to give back to their communities. Each has a unique and inspiring story, filled with determination and resilience, which has led them to this point in their educational journey.

Four students on their paths towards higher education

Each of the four students shared a unique perspective on how education will enable them to make a difference:

Julian Najjumal, pursuing a BA in Medicine & Surgery, found her calling in oncology after a previous stint in cytotechnology, where she witnessed the devastating impact of cancer on patients. Her passion for her chosen field is palpable. “When we encountered patients diagnosed with cancer who asked us what comes next, we didn’t know which treatment would be suitable for the next stages of the disease to help them. That uncertainty is what inspired me to choose Medicine and Surgery. I want to help patients who are ill and find solutions that will make them feel better” she stated.

Mukibi Innocent, working towards a Diploma in Science & Public Health, dreams of improving public health standards within his community. He envisions a future filled with hope and positivity “I want to study Science & Public Health because I want to help my community and family to be in a good, clean, healthy environment,” he says.

Nakiguli Maria Dinah, studying for a Diploma in Pharmacy, was inspired by her earlier experience as a medical lab technician. She notes: “First, I earned a certificate in a medical lab, where people get diagnostic tests. Still, we do not look into the medication needed for the diagnosed diseases or conditions.”

Nanteza Travas Sarah, committed to earning a Bachelor’s in Education, sees herself as a guiding source of knowledge for the children in her community. With a passion for teaching, she emphasises the scarcity of educators in her community. “I am studying for a Bachelor’s in Education. The reason is that there are very few teachers in my community. I want to become a professional teacher who will help many children grow and achieve their dreams,” she explains.

Education as a catalyst for change

XM’s scholarship initiative reinforces the idea that education can turn ambition into real-world impact, addressing critical issues like healthcare, education and community development. And XM’s commitment to these young people underscores a broader vision for a world where education is a right, not a privilege.

The company’s third mission in Uganda may have been completed, but its humanitarian work in the African country continues. Needs are already being assessed for future initiatives, focusing on children’s education and well-being, and creating equal opportunities for everyone.
