A symbolic olive tree was planted by Cypriots in London to mark 50 years since the invasion of Cyprus, they announced on Tuesday.
The ceremony was organised by National Federation of Cypriots of the United Kingdom and was attended by the mayors of the twinned towns of Barnet (north London) and Morphou, Tony Vourou and Victoras Hadjiavraam.
“We hope that a solution will soon be found whereby the people of Morphou and the people of Cyprus will live united in a free Cyprus,” Vourou said.
The ceremony, in Barnet, not only shows the hope and shared beliefs of the Cypriot community to be united once again but also the relationship development between the UK and Cyprus, Vourou said, referring to UK PM Keir Starmer’s visit to the island on Tuesday.
It was also attended by representatives from Morphou.
