The great director Pedro Almodovar’s newest film, released just this year, is coming to the island in early January for a screening. Sure to entice cinephiles and film buffs, the screening will be held at the Rialto Theatre on January 8. Beyond gathering lovers of Spanish cinema, the film welcomes a wide range of audiences as this is the director’s English-language full-length debut starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore.

The film premiered in September at the 81st Venice International Film Festival winning the Golden Lion award. It hit theatres for the first time a month later, first in Spain and then across the US in December.

The Room Next Door is based on Sigrid Nunez’s novel What Are You Going Through? In the film, Ingrid and Martha were close friends in their youth, when they worked together at the same magazine. Ingrid went on to become an autofiction novelist while Martha became a war reporter, and they were separated by the circumstances of life. After years of being out of touch, they meet again in an extreme yet strangely sweet situation.

The film will be screened at 8.30pm for audiences aged above 15 and tickets (€8) are already available on the Rialto Theatre website.

Next to follow at the Limassol theatre is a series of local productions ranging from concerts to plays, dance and interdisciplinary performances as Rialto welcomes 2025.
