Nicosia district court handed down a €15,450 fine to two companies after a man died in a labour accident, it was reported on Monday.

According to a labour inspection department statement, the two companies are S&G Herbs Farm Ltd and Alion Vegetable & Fruit Co Ltd, which were collaborating together for vegetable packaging.

S&G Herbs Farm was fined €11,250 for causing the fatal accident to an employee and putting other employees at risk.

The company failed to install proper protective systems on the vegetable drying machine. As a result, an employee entered the machine’s hazardous zone to clean the floor and was crushed by a mobile unit of the machinery.

He was fatally injured.

The company was convicted of failing to place the necessary warning signs and markings for employees, as well as carry out proper supervision on the site.

Court also fined Alion Vegetable & Fruit which engages, among other things in washing, driving and packaging of agricultural products.

It allowed employees of S&G Herbs Farms to package vegetables, and was fined €4,500 for the same violations.
