Polis Chrysochous’ new sewerage system is expected to be completed in 2029, the town’s mayor Yiotis Papachristofi said on Monday.

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, he explained the contract for the project had been signed in November 2023, but that works are not expected to begin until early 2026.

When it is completed, he said, the project will “bring about significant benefits, mainly with regard to the possibility of using reclaimed water and the produced sludge, which has wide-ranging usability in the energy sector and in the agricultural sector”.

He added that the project’s contract includes “the provision of services for the preparation of a study and of the design of a sewerage network for collecting wastewater and rainwater”, as well as the preparation of tender documents for its construction.

He went on to say that the management of the contract is the responsibility of the water development department, and that it is being implemented as part of the government’s Thalia 2021-2027 plan to utilise European Union cohesion policy funds.
