Police on Tuesday were on the hunt for a 25-year-old man believed to be behind an attempted murder in Limassol on Monday night.

Egyptian national Shehata Seifeldin Sayed shot at three people who came to his Ayia Fyla home at around 7:30pm, injuring a 39-year-old man in the leg.

Though the victim was initially declared to have been a 41-year-old Greek Cypriot, his age was later revised to 39.

Police said the man’s health is out of danger after he underwent surgery at a nearby clinic.

Sayed fled the scene with the vehicle the 39-year-old had arrived in with two other friends.

According to police, the visit had been pre-arranged in an attempt to resolve differences. All individuals are known to police.

It appears that after the three parked outside Sayed’s home, he opened the door holding a gun and shot at them once without injuring anyone.

The three then tried to escape, and the suspect chased them while continuously shooting at them.

He injured the 39-year-old who was taken to hospital by an individual at the scene.

A subsequent search of Sayed’s home turned up 2.4 kilograms of cannabis, 940 grams of cannabis resin, and 105 grams of cocaine. They were seized by the police.

The motive behind the attack appears to be financial differences over illegal activities, Limassol CID chief Lefteris Kyriacou said at the scene on Monday night.

Commenting on the fact that the incident took place in a busy and densely populated area, Kyriacou said “it is worrying, but the police are in the area carrying out checks and taking appropriate action.”
