Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna and the new European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans Costas Kadis exchanged views on agriculture and fisheries on Friday during a meeting in Nicosia.
They also discussed the progress of preparations for Cyprus’ assumption of EU presidency in the first half of 2026.
In her statements after the end of the meeting, Raouna said: “Fisheries and oceans issues are high on the agenda of the European Commission. We have some specific files on which we exchanged views with the Commissioner.”
She also briefed him on the Informal Council on agriculture and fisheries that will take place during the coming semester “and we exchanged views on specific deliverables”.
Kadis, after thanking the deputy minister for the “very productive meeting”, said that the implementation of European Union policies also depended on the cooperation of the European Commission with the member states, especially during the period when they hold the presidency of the European Union.
“I found that the deputy minister and her colleagues were already completely ready to discuss the issues,” he said.
He mentioned the implementation of the Oceans Pact, the possible revision of the common fisheries policy, and the promotion of aquaculture in the EU which were “of paramount importance”.
