Vehicle owners in Cyprus can now renew their registration for 2025 as the process officially opened on Tuesday, 7 January.

The renewal period will run until midnight on 11 March 2025, according to a statement from the road transport department.

Vehicle licences can be renewed for three, six, nine, or 12 months. The department said renewals made after the March 11 deadline will incur a late fee of €10, plus an additional 10 per cent of the annual licence cost.

To complete the renewal process, vehicle owners must provide a valid MOT certificate and proof of insurance. Those who do not wish to renew their registration for 2025 must submit a notification for vehicle immobilisation, either in person or online via the road transport website.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades, announced on Saturday that the ministry is preparing decrees concerning vehicle recalls, specifically those linked to defective Takata airbags. Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, Vafeades confirmed that the draft decrees will be sent to the Legal Service for technical review this week.

Although some vehicles, including models like the Mazda Demio and Honda, have been flagged for recalls due to safety concerns, the minister clarified that there are currently no restrictions preventing these vehicles from undergoing technical inspections. The ministry has yet to finalise how these cases will be handled.

Vafeades further noted a separate category of vehicles, primarily of European origin, whose owners have repeatedly ignored distributor recall notices. He emphasised that these vehicles will only be eligible for registration renewal once the required recall work is completed.
