Architects have sounded the alarm regarding the rapid development in the scenic village of Platres, warning that the area’s historical architectural character and sensitive natural environment are being overlooked.
The architects are especially worried about renovations at Forest Park Hotel, a building steeped in Cyprus’ history. Constructed in the early 1930s, it was the first structure on the island designed in the Modernist style.
While acknowledging the necessity of renovation, the Cyprus architects association stressed the importance of preserving the hotel’s original character. The association added that the hotel should become a listed property and called on the state to create a special framework to safeguard buildings of contemporary heritage.
The association emphasised the urgent need for regulations to guide development in Platres, ensuring that renovations and new constructions respect the village’s unique character and historical significance.
The group further highlighted the importance of harmoniously incorporating buildings into the natural environment, ensuring that development aligns with the area’s historical and aesthetic values.
