The three people, two women and a man, who were arrested after participating in a migrant support protest following the death of the 24-year-old from Pakistan were released on Sunday night after being charged in writing.

The 66-year-old man was arrested for violating the personal data protection law after using his phone to record.

His phone was confiscated as evidence by the police and will be returned to him after the examinations.
The man was taken to the Nicosia police station and was released later on Sunday evening.

The two women, aged 31 and 32, are jointly facing five offences of illegal assembly and insulting the public after shouting abusive quotes from a loudspeaker.

They are also facing charges of disturbing the peace and failing to provide identification.

The 31-year-old also faces two additional offences of assaulting a police officer.

The two women were arrested, and taken to the central police station of Nicosia, in Lycavitos, from where they were released around 7.30 pm.

The NGO AFOA on Monday condemned the arrests, saying that the protest that took place was peaceful with no incidents taking place.

“The police attempted to arrest more protesters and called the anti-riot squad, threatening with further violence if the remaining protesters did not leave the area,” the AFOA announcement said.

They said video recording or screaming political quotes using a megaphone are not crimes to be handcuffed or arrested for.

The dead 24-year-old Pakistani man was found face down in a plot in Strovolos, after he was shot in buffer-zone-adjacent village of Potamia earlier this month after an incident with police and people smugglers in which shots were fired.
