A 45-year-old man was on Thursday found guilty of the premeditated murder of Charalambos Constantinides on the British base of Dhekelia.

The man, named as Costas Soteriou, shot Constantinides in the head with a hunting rifle in June last year after the pair had reportedly been engaged in an argument over money.

After the shooting, Soteriou handed himself into the Dhekelia police station.

Speaking after the hearing, British bases police chief inspector Fanos Christodoulou said the investigation into the shooting had been “long and intensive”, and that the police force are “very happy that Constantinides’ family have seen justice served”.

“Nothing can make up for the loss of a loved one but at the very least, the perpetrator of this crime is going to face a very heavy punishment,” he added.

Soteriou’s sentencing is scheduled to take place in March.
