Nicosia Criminal Court postponed the trial of Simon Aykut due to health reasons. The Israeli-Turkish businessman is accused of usurping Greek-Cypriot properties in the north.
According to Aykut’s defence lawyer Maria Neophytou, her client is suffering from cancer and was therefore unable to attend the trial set for Monday morning.
Neophytou said her client was facing health problems that were finally confirmed by certificates she received from Britain the night before the trial.
Due to Aykut’s condition, she was unable to discuss the trial with her client, Neophytou argued, and requested the postponement of the hearing.
The Nicosia Criminal Court confirmed her request scheduling the hearing to February 6. Aykut will remain in custody until then.
The Israeli-Turkish businessman’s trial has been adjourned multiple times since his arrest in early June last year.
Aykut is accused of selling €43 million worth of property on Greek Cypriot land in the north and faces a total of 124 charges.
