President Nikos Christodoulides has called a National Council meeting on February 14, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said on Tuesday.

The meeting will focus on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem with Christodoulides to brief political leaders on the groundwork ahead of an expanded meeting led by the United Nations secretary-general.

“Our unwavering commitment to restarting negotiations from where they left off remains firm,” Letymbiotis said.

He emphasised that talks must proceed within the framework set out by relevant UN security council resolutions. The goal, he added, is a final settlement of the Cyprus problem.

The announcement follows a high-level meeting in New York between Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos and UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Monday.

Kombos reaffirmed the government’s strong will for meaningful negotiations. After the talks, he stressed the importance of clear messaging to the UN and proper preparation for the next steps.

Meanwhile, UN Special Representative in Cyprus Colin Stewart has been holding separate meetings with both sides. He said there had been progress on crossing points and he had sensed a strong desire from both communities to find a solution.

On January 20, Christodoulides met Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar at Stewart’s residence.

During that meeting, Christodoulides presented an eight-point proposal on crossings and other confidence-building measures discussed with the UN in New York. Another meeting between the two leaders is expected soon.

UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo will visit Cyprus on February 10 to hold talks with Christodoulides and Tatar.
