The Limassol police directorate is putting plans into place to prevent any disturbances tonight as it braces for a tense situation involving two competing demonstrations. The march, organised by the far-right Elam party, will take place on Independence Street, with the slogan “March against the criminality of illegal immigrants”.
Meanwhile, anti-fascist groups have announced a counter-demonstration in the Molos area, under the banner “Against Fascism.” The overlap of these events has raised concerns about potential clashes.
Authorities have confirmed that additional support will be provided by forces from neighbouring districts, as well as the police mobile anti-disturbance unit. Police are also working closely with organisers of both events and other key figures to ensure public safety. Limassol’s criminal investigation department is closely monitoring the situation, as tensions have been running high ever since the announcement of the two marches.
A police spokesperson reminded the public that individuals have the right to protest peacefully, as long as they do not violate the law or disrupt the rights of others. Authorities have stressed that the possession of offensive weapons, the wearing of hoods, and the use of racist or abusive language will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
To ensure public safety, Independence Street will be closed from 6.30pm onwards.
In addition to the policing of the marches, the police are also preparing for potential flashpoints at locations with high foreigner traffic. Shops and areas frequented by migrant communities have been identified as sensitive points, especially in light of the violent unrest seen in September 2023, when anti-migrant riots took place in Limassol.
Local authorities are determined to avoid a repeat of these events.
Concerns are also growing within the food delivery sector. Given the nature of their work, delivery drivers are dependent on receiving orders and many are anxious about how tonight’s demonstrations will affect their ability to operate.
Food delivery platforms are preparing for disruptions, with reports suggesting that algorithms will be adjusted to restrict deliveries within a defined radius around the Limassol city centre during the march. This precaution is expected to prevent further complications as the situation unfolds.
