The Platres-Troodos, Kavrounas-Troodos and Prodromos-Troodos roads are only open for 4×4 vehicles or those equipped with snow chains for now, police said on Monday afternoon.
Meanwhile, water has accumulated on both directions of the Paphos-Limassol highway, primarily in the Pissouri and Paramali areas after Monday’s heavy rainfall, leading to dangerously slippery roads. At present, urban areas are not considered particularly dangerous aside from the prevailing wintery weather conditions.
Authorities warned people to drive with caution and comply with traffic rules to limit the risk of accidents.
The meteorological department issued a yellow weather warning from 11am until 6pm for isolated heavy thunderstorms expected island wide on Monday.
Precipitation rates expected to exceed 35 millimetres per hour and forecasted hail. Overnight will be cloudy with a chance of isolated rains or a storm.
Temperatures will drop to 4C inland, 9C on the coast, and 1C in the higher mountains, where frost is expected. Snow was recorded in Troodos Square, 2cm, and Chionistra, 10cm, on early Monday morning.
More snow is expected on Thursday with wintery conditions lasting until Sunday. Next week, sun is expected with temperatures climbing up to 18 degrees.
