Everywhere you look, it is carnival time. The biggest celebrations are, of course, in Limassol yet other cities join in the carnival fever with Sunday parades and festivities. This Thursday, Tsiknopempti, all-day celebrations will make the historical centre of Nicosia come to life with music, dancing, a parade, food and drink.
Shop owners on Nicosia’s pedestrianised streets and the Faneromeni church, with the support of the municipality, are organising ‘Tsiknopempti on Ledras and Onasagorou and the Courtyard of the Church of Faneromeni.’
From. 11.45am until late in the evening, the old town will fill with carnival decorations, fiesta vibes, music, performances and entertainment that is free for all. Until 2.30pm the church courtyard will host traditional games and songs with the children of Faneromeni Public Kindergarten, along with barbecuing and free treats.
A carnival parade will bring a festive air at 4.30pm as the Queen of the Aglantzia Carnival will parade on Nicosia municipality’s carnival float, accompanied by the military band of the National Guard. The parade will march through Ledra and Onasagorou streets, starting at the Ledra Street crossing point.
Live music will commence at 5.30pm with the band of the Mousikon Kafeneion performing on Onasagorou Street. The performances will continue with the band of Kath’ Odon at the end of Ledra Street at 6.30pm, accompanied by dancers from the Latin and Greek School of Dance.
In true spirit of the day, free grilled meats will be offered throughout the day – souvlaki, sausages, zivania, wine and beer!
