Tuesday’s electricity production covered needs, says operator
Electricity production on Tuesday met the demand and the situation was being closely monitored, Transmission System Operator spokeswoman Chara Kousiappa said on Tuesday evening.
The north on Monday night supplied the Republic with electricity after a fault at the Dhekelia power station left the Republic unable to fulfil its own electrical needs.
Kousiappa said that on Monday afternoon an operational reduction was recorded, which led to the need for power exchange with the north that continued throughout the night as part of the confidence building measures.
She told the Cyprus News Agency that the status of the system was monitored daily as some power generating units were out of service due to scheduled maintenance, while there were also failures in some individual units.
Kousiappa also said that in the event that demand exceeded production, rotating cuts may be implemented across the island for a period of 30 minutes each time, with the Transmission System Operator issuing statements to inform the public and provide recommendations to limit consumption during peak periods.
“The situation is constantly being assessed, we expect the power generation department to deliver additional units,” Kousiappa said, adding that Tuesday’s production was sufficient to meet demand, therefore there was no need for power cuts.
According to the official data from the operator, conventional generation at 8pm on Tuesday stood at 897 Mw, dispersed generation was estimated at 9 Mw and wind generation at 2 Mw, meeting the total demand for the same time, which stood at 908 Mw.
