EU member states approved €3.5 million in emergency support for farmers in Cyprus, approving a European Commission proposal for assistance to address the impact of natural disasters since spring 2024.
The aid will have to be distributed to farmers by September 30.
The measure aims at supporting farmers who have lost production and subsequently income from natural disasters.
The amount can be complemented up to 200 per cent by national funds.
Cyprus had exceptionally low rainfall and high temperatures during the first half of 2024, which resulted in drought that affected production in crops, including cereals, olives and vegetables.
“We can’t change what has already happened, but we can learn from this and be better prepared,” Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen said.
The decision will now have to be officially adopted by the Commission and published in the EU gazette, after which eligible member states will receive the funds without delay.
Cyprus will have to notify the Commission by May 31 on how it would be distributing the aid.
