Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis on Sunday assured that the electricity interconnection project between Greece and Cyprus will continue as planned.
In an interview with “Kathimerini”, he said that the investigations for the interconnection cable will continue as usual, adding that this is a European project.
“The interconnection programme is important, especially as far as Cyprus is concerned, because it removes the energy isolation of the island. So it will continue according to the planning of the company that has undertaken the project,” Gerapetritis said.
Responding to a question regarding the possibility of a reaction from Turkey, the Greek Foreign Minister stressed that Athens believes and hopes that there will be no reaction and that understanding will be shown so that the project can continue.
“In case there is tension, we will try to defuse it. The exploration and laying of electric cables is absolutely protected by international law. It does not require any permit and therefore there is absolutely no claim under international law on this issue,” Gerapetritis said.
