The Union of Cyprus Journalists (UCJ) expressed its full support on Thursday to journalist Theodosia Apostolou after she received death threats following a post on her news website ‘Larnaka Online’.

The union called on the police to investigate the complaint and bring those responsible to justice.

UCJ said “no journalist should accept and tolerate threats, especially when these threats concern his own life.”

Apostolou had shared a story about a local politician on April 1,in response to which the politician’s 35-year-old son allegedly tried to intimidate the journalist into taking the post down and even threatened her with death, UCJ said.

“Posts by political figures on social media are of public interest and therefore, when this is deemed useful, they will be used for journalistic use”, UCJ said.

The Larnaca police department on Wednesday said that evidence and statements regarding the incident had been received and were under examination. A 35-year-old suspect had already been questioned and was charged but released to appear before court at a later point.

So far, no date for the court hearing has been announced.
