The police on Monday issued a warning to the public following multiple reports of fraud involving individuals posing as government officials. The scammers are attempting to steal money from victims’ bank accounts by posing as staff from various government services, including the social insurance services and the Cyprus electricity authority.
According to the police, the fraudsters contact people through phone calls made from both mobile and landline numbers. They claim to be government employees and instruct the victims to provide sensitive banking details, including account numbers and PINs. In some cases, they also pressure individuals into confirming transactions, all in an effort to steal money from their bank accounts.
Authorities are urging the public to remain cautious and take protective measures. They advise not to respond to any suspicious calls or follow the instructions given by the scammers. Victims are reminded to keep sensitive information, such as access codes, PINs, personal identification details, and banking information, confidential.
The police recommend verifying the identity of any caller by contacting the relevant government departments directly through their official channels, ensuring that individuals claiming to represent government services are legitimate.
