The Cyprus Chamber of Commerce & Industry (Keve) on Monday announced that businesses operating in the food sector were the primary focus of this year’s Cyber Security Weekend.

The event, held on May 9-10, 2025, at the Golden Bay Hotel in Larnaca, was co-organised by Keve and the Digital Security Authority (DSA).

It aimed to inform and raise awareness among food sector companies about the increasing importance of cybersecurity.

Keve’s initiative highlighted the growing risks associated with the digital transformation of food businesses, as cyberattacks no longer target specific industries, but can cause widespread operational and social damage.

The statement emphasised that “the continuously increasing degree of digitalisation in food business operations creates new fields of opportunity, but also risk”.

In light of the new European directive, NIS2, which imposes stricter cybersecurity standards, the event provided a timely update for companies who will now be required to comply with tighter protection frameworks.

Participants were given detailed information about the requirements of the NIS2 directive, which focuses on the security of networks and information systems, and sets out concrete protection measures businesses must adopt to be adequately prepared for emerging threats.

The directive is especially relevant to the food sector, as companies in this field must now implement appropriate safeguards and response strategies to confront cyber risks.

The event was attended by executives from both the management and technical departments of food sector companies.

Attendees also engaged in pre-scheduled, one-on-one meetings with specialised cybersecurity firms, promoting opportunities for collaboration and partnership.

“These B2B meetings with cybersecurity experts aimed to foster cooperation and synergy between industries,” the announcement said.
