The Nicosia municipality on Friday confirmed that the public swimming pool will reopen on June 27, while the municipal pool in Aglandjia remains closed.

“With the completion of extensive renovation work at the end of 2024, a full upgrade of all swimming facilities has been achieved,” the municipality said.

Renovations included improvements to the main municipal pool, the children’s pool, the Olympic pool, and the training pool. In addition, a new service building was constructed at the Olympic swimming pool. A tender for further renovations to the main building – including changing rooms, showers, and the cafeteria – is expected to be launched soon.

Meanwhile, the Aglandjia swimming pool, which was closed in 2024 due to “serious safety and health concerns,” will remain shut. However, the municipality expressed its intention to “proceed with its full upgrade towards the end of summer.”

The planned works include upgrading electromechanical systems and renovating the building and swimming facilities.

The Aglandjia pool, the only 25-metre public pool in Nicosia, was originally intended to include a 50-metre pool. That pool remains unfinished, nearly five years after the facility was first closed. Renovation work on both pools is being funded by the energy ministry and the Cyprus Sports Organisation.

Entry fees for the upcoming swimming season will remain at 2021 levels, the municipal council said, “recognising the financial difficulties of the citizens.”

Nicosia residents have long awaited clarity on whether the pool would reopen this summer. Apart from a brief reopening in 2021, the pool has been closed to the public for the past five years. Until now, access was limited to sports swimmers training in the Olympic pool.

With temperatures reaching record highs, both pools could serve as essential sources of relief, particularly for residents without cars, families, the elderly, and those with limited time.

The Cyprus Mail attempted to provide a pricing overview, but the municipal pool’s website remains inactive. At the time of writing, it displays only a “Coming soon!” message in bold white letters over a photo of the pool that many residents hope to enjoy once more.
