A 23-year-old man who had been arrested earlier this month on suspicion of attempted murder after stabbing a teenager has been hospitalised at the Athalassa psychiatric hospital following a court order, the police said on Tuesday.

The stabbing had taken place in Paralimni on August 16 and the man had been handed an eight-day remand the following day.

During that remand, the man was examined by a psychiatrist and was, according to the police, “deemed to be eligible for temporary hospitalisation”.

Doctors found that the man is “not able to attend court proceedings”, with the court order mandating his hospitalisation valid for two months.

His victim, an 18-year-old, had been initially taken to the Famagusta general hospital in Paralimni, before being transferred to the Nicosia general hospital due to the severity of his wounds.

The 23-year-old was arrested later on the evening of the stabbing, initially for breaching the peace after shouting loudly as officers approached him.

He was later re-arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The police’s investigation into the matter is ongoing.
