By the end of 2024, some 5,037 couples have registered in civil partnerships, 415 of which were same-sex couples, according to recent figures presented to the cabinet by Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou.
The figures were shared in response to a question from MP and newly elected president of the Greens, Stavros Papadouris, who according to media reports, had initially submitted questions on the matter in October 2023.
The civil union law, which allows for same-sex unions came into effect in early 2016. It aims to ensure that queer couples have the same rights and responsibilities as mixed-gender couples. Other than in a marriage, couples in a civil union – no matter the gender – do not have the right to jointly adopt children.
