Cyprus Post unveiled a commemorative stamp marking 200 years since the Exodus of Messolonghi on Tuesday.
The stamp commemorates a key event in modern Greek history, symbolising freedom and sacrifice.
Deputy director of the Post Office Pavlos Pavlides as Morphou Municipality affirmed its long-standing relationship with Messolonghi, forged through a 2002 twinning agreement.
Mayor Viktor Hadjiavraam emphasised that their bond reflects shared experiences of hardship and resilience.
“Messolonghi shows that Hellenism’s history is marked by sacrifice, not resignation,” he said, drawing parallels to Morphou’s own struggles, where many residents have lived away from home for decades yet maintained their “memory and dignity.”
He quoted Loukis Akritas: “Every free man is a citizen of Messolonghi.”
Messolonghi Mayor Spyros Diamantopoulos said the initiative deepens a relationship rooted in shared historical experiences.
“Cyprus is close to Messolonghi; these are not separate places but a shared consciousness,” he said, adding that such commemorations reaffirm enduring ties.
