The Greek frigate Kimon is departing Cyprus, government sources confirmed on Tuesday, following its deployment to the island in March amid heightened regional security concerns.
Meanwhile, Elli has already left the port of Salamis in Greece bound for Cyprus, though it remains unclear whether the two frigates will cross paths or if Elli will arrive before Kimon’s departure.
Kimon, along with the frigate Psara, had arrived in Cyprus on March 4 in a move followed by additional vessels from European partners.
The Greek frigates are equipped with the Kentavros drone defence system.
They arrived after communication between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and President Nikos Christodoulides after a drone attack targeted the base at Akrotiri.
While no further details have been given regarding the duration of Psara’s stay or the continued presence of Greek F16 fighter jets that later arrived on the island, officials have stressed that cooperation between Cyprus, Greece and European allies remains ongoing, with a focus on maintaining stability and readiness in the region.
