Television owners have until July 1 to transition to the new upgraded European digital technology platform by reprogramming their channels, only if they still use an aerial, the deputy digital policy ministry said on Wednesday.

Platform DVB-T is being upgraded to DVB-T2 with the transition deadline being extended to July to ensure unhindered access to television programmes and smooth adaptation to the new data before the current platform is withdrawn.

The new platform offers high definition, 4K sound quality, more channels and better use of frequencies.

For television sets manufactured after 2017 that support DVB-T2, the channels will need to be reprogrammed. For older technology, people can purchase a decoder costing from €20 to €50, or replace their TV.

The deputy ministry clarified that the changes concern those who receive a signal via an aerial for free channels. Subscription platforms and CyBC channels are not affected.

Aerials do not need to be replaced.
